Description:
CHALAPATAM is a city located in the state of Andhra Pradesh in southern India. It is the administrative headquarters of the district of the same name. The city is also the commercial capital of the state. The city is located on the banks of the Krishna River, at an elevation of 705 metres (2,310 ft). The city has a population of 1,686,829 as of 2011. The city was founded in 1536 by the Vijayanagar Empire, and was named after Chalapati Raya, the ruler of the empire. Chalapati Raya was originally from the village of Chidambaram in the present-day state of Tamil Nadu. He was a great warrior and a devotee of the Hindu god Vishnu. Chalapati Raya led a military campaign against the Sultan of Delhi, and conquered the region that is now known as Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. Chalapati Raya named the city after himself, and the city was initially known as Vijayanagarapatnam. In 1542, the city was captured by the Portuguese, and the name was changed to Cochin. In 1663, the city was captured by the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb, and the name was changed to the present-day name.
